CTA Driver Dies After Collapsing Behind Wheel Of Bus

CHICAGO (STMW) - A 55-year-old CTA bus driver with more than 18 years on the job died Tuesday after collapsing behind the wheel on the Southwest Side, according to the transit agency.

The driver, who was operating a northbound No. 52 Kedzie/California bus, had stopped near 55th Street and Kedzie Avenue, CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said.

Another CTA driver headed south on Kedzie Avenue first noticed the man was slumped over inside the bus and called the transit agency's control center, which called 911, Lukidis said.

He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and later died, she said. He suffered from a medical emergency, but further details on what happened were not yet known.

The 55-year-old man was an 18-year veteran of the CTA, Lukidis said.

Both buses were in service at the time, although it wasn't immediately clear whether any customers were aboard, Lukidis said.
