CHICAGO (CBS) — One of the richest people in the history of the world lived right here in Chicago.

Oprah? Pritzker? The Beanie Baby guy?

No.

It was Marshall Field, founder of the legendary department store by the same name. His net worth, in inflation-adjusted dollars, is $66 billion, according to Celebrity NetWorth.

The richest American ever is John D. Rockefeller at $340 billion, followed by Andrew Carnegie at $310 billion.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is the richest living man on the list.

The richest person ever in history is an African king, Mansa Musa I–who made his $400 billion fortune by plundering West Africa’s salt and gold.
