Robbery Suspect Surrenders After Standoff In Oak Lawn

OAK LAWN, Ill. (CBS) -- Police in Oak Lawn said an armed robbery suspect has surrendered - after barricading himself inside a stairwell of a home this afternoon.

It started in a Radio Shack store in Oak Lawn, at 95th Street and Cicero Avenue.

Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Michael Kaufmann says the clerk called police, because he recognized a man in the store as an armed robbery suspect in the south suburbs.

Kaufmann says when police arrived, the man ran and ducked into the basement stairwell of a home about a block away, in the 4800 block of West 96th Street.

"He was armed with a firearm. He was holding and pointing the firearm, threatening the police. He surrendered just a short time ago after negotiations with the Oak Lawn Police. He surrendered and walked out," Kaufmann says.

Chief Kaufmann says no shots were fired, and no one was injured during the hour-long standoff.

He says no one was in the home when the man ran inside the basement stairwell.
