CHICAGO (CBS) — Truancy in the Chicago Public School system is still a major issue, according to an analysis by the Chicago Tribune.
About 1 in 8 elementary school students miss at least for weeks of class in the 2010-2011 school year.
The Tribune reports that is nearly 32,000 students between kindergarten and eighth grade.
About 19 percent of kindergarteners were listed as “chronic truants” because they had at least nine absences.
Educators say many kids are having to miss school to take care of younger siblings.
