CHICAGO (CBS) – A 14-year-old Chicago girl who was one of several people wounded over the weekend is telling her story.

CBS 2’s Pamela Jones reports.

Fourteen-year-old Cerria McComb says she’s afraid to go outside after being shot Saturday while visiting friends.

“We haven’t even lived our life, and it’s teenagers that’s shooting other teenagers. It’s crazy,” she says.

The scene: near 78th and Carpenter. Cerria was on the sidewalk when someone pulled the trigger.

“The first gunshot like hit my leg, hit the back of my knee. And then I just paused, and they was still shooting,” the teen says.

She ran, and a neighbor a few doors down ran out to help her.

Kenyata Carter saw Cerria screaming just feet from her doorstep and helped the bleeding girl call her mother on the phone.

The girls’ mother won’t forget the call. Cerria told her: “Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, I’m shot.”

She plans to join community activists to encourage parents to stand up and make Chicago streets safer.

“These people with these guns are taking over,” she says. “Again, I say they’re cowards. They’re punks. They think they’re little thugs, and I’m not going to tolerate it.”

Community activist Andrew Holmes says he understands the frustration of people who live in unstable neighborhoods. But he says parents need to step up and monitor their children.

“These are their kids that are committing these crimes,” he says.

Eight people were killed and more than two dozen people were injured in weekend violence in Chicago.
