Mayor Emanuel said there is not a parent and there is not a grandparent in America who right now is not a resident of Sandy Hook Connecticut.
"All of us are residents and citizens of Sandy Hook, Connecticut," said Emanuel. "And it is incumbent upon all of us to make sure that no child, no parent, no teacher, no principal, no community faces what they faced."
And the mayor didn't duck the controversial issue of gun control when he called for what he described as common sense gun laws.
"We got to know the difference between sportsmanship and an uzi. One that was meant for the battlefield, one that was never meant for our streets," said Emanuel.
The mayor asked everyone to think about and pray for those most closely dealing with the tragedy.
Emanuel spoke at the ribbon-cutting for the new 12th District Police Station at 14th and Blue Island.
