Preckwinkle To Introduce Stricter Gun Regulations

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Gun owners in Chicago and suburban Cook County may have new incentives for keeping better track of their weapons.

Following a record number of homicides in Chicago last year, Mayor Emanuel reportedly want to double the penalty for gun owners who fail to report the loss, theft or transfer of guns to six months in jail.

Preckwinkle To Introduce Stricter Gun Regulations

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle says she will introduce a proposal on Wednesday since the problem goes beyond city limits.

"20 percent of the illegal guns that are used in crimes in Chicago are purchased legally in suburban Cook so we have to get a better handle on guns across the county and this is a way to do that."

Preckwinkle declined to offer further details about the proposal, saying it is still being worked out.
