2 Dead, 15 Wounded In Shootings Since Friday

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Weekend gun violence in Chicago left two men dead and at least 13 other people wounded, including a man shot during a party in the Loop's historic Palmer House Hilton Hotel.

The man, 25, was attending a party on the 22nd floor of the hotel at 17 E. Monroe St. when a male shooter pulled out a gun and opened fire, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

He was shot in the right leg, and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, Alfaro said. No one is in custody early Sunday, and police had no word on what sparked the shooting.

A representative for the hotel could not be reached for comment.

The weekend's first fatal shooting happened about 9:15 p.m. Friday in the West Side Austin neighborhood. A 21-year-old man was shot several times through a glass window while he was inside a Popeyes Chicken and Biscuits restaurant in the 5500 block of West North Avenue, police said.

Marshall D. Fields-Hall, of the 1500 block of North Luna Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County within the hour, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

About 15 minutes after that attack, a separate fatal shooting claimed the life of a 19-year-old man in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Jovantay Alexander, of the 1800 block of East 72nd Street, was found dead near 54th and Laflin streets, according to police and the medical examiner's office. He had been shot in the face.

No one has been arrested in connection with either slaying as of early Sunday, police said.

Weekend shootings throughout Chicago left 12 other people wounded.

The most recent attack happened about 4:55 a.m. in the 300 block of East 75th Street, in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side. A female driving a silver, older-model Lexus pulled up alongside a 28-year-old man, and her male passenger started shooting before they fled. The man was shot in the hand and is in good condition at Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Centers.

A passenger riding in a car near North and Hamlin Avenues was shot about 4:15 a.m. in the West Side Humboldt Park neighborhood. The man, 22, was shot in the arm and driven to Our Lady of the Resurrection Hospital, where he is in "stable" condition.

About 3:45 a.m., someone in an SUV fired shots at a man getting out of a vehicle in the 3900 block of West 65th Place, police said. The man, 19, was shot in the jaw and right hand, and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he is in "stable" condition. Doctors expect to transfer him to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

About 10 p.m. Saturday, two suspects opened fire at a 20-year-old man in the 300 block of West 56th Place, in the Englewood neighborhood. The man was shot in the left shin and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in "stable" condition.

About 9:19 p.m., a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 8500 block of South Loomis Boulevard, police said, citing preliminary information. He was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

About 2 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder in the Austin neighborhood. The teen was shot in the 1400 block of North Laramie Avenue, near LaFollette Park, and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.

In other shootings Friday, two men were shot at 7:34 p.m. Friday at South Racine Avenue and West 74th Street in the South Side Englewood neighborhood, authorities said.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the back and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, Fire Media Affairs said. An 18-year-old man was shot in the foot and taken in good condition to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center.

About 9:45 p.m. two teenage boys were walking down the sidewalk in the 8400 block of South Constance Avenue about 9:45 p.m. in the South Side Avalon Park neighborhood when a light-colored car pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

The younger boy, 15, was shot in the chest, Greer said. Paramedics took him to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition. Another boy, 16, suffered a graze wound to the back, and is in good condition at Jackson Park Hospital, Greer said.

At 10:20 p.m., a 21-year-old man was shot through a glass door of an apartment after hearing someone knocking in the 1300 block of East 75th Street in the South Side Grand Crossing neighborhood.

He was taken in "stable" condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with gunshot wounds to both legs and an arm, police said.

The shooting was possibly gang-related.

A 26-year-old man was shot at 11:35 p.m. in the 4400 block of South Washtenaw Avenue in the South Side Brighton Park neighborhood, police said.

He was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.
