Illinois Extends John Groce's Contract

(CBS) -- Fighting Illini Head Basketball Coach John Groce received a one-year contract extension, according to a press release.

The contract will be extended to the end of the 2017-18 season, pending approval of the board of trustees.

Groce will also receive a $200,000 raise, making his annual compensation $1.6 million.

"We are pleased to extend John Groce's contract by a year and reward him for an outstanding job in his first season at Illinois," Illinois Athletic Director Mike Thomas said in the release. "The arrow is definitely pointing up for Fighting Illini basketball, and this helps solidify the commitment by both the University and John to continue moving the program to a championship level."

Groce coached the Illini to the Round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Miami.
