Swoopes Wants To Start Women's Basketball Dynasty At Loyola
(CBS) -- Loyola women's basketball introduced Sheryl Swoopes as its eighth head coach on Monday.
Swoopes says she's looking to make Loyola a nationally recognized program during her time at the University. The three-time Olympic gold medalist and four-time WNBA champion brings instant name recognition to a Loyola program that is still searching for its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
During Swoopes' college career at Texas Tech, she guided the Lady Raiders to the 1993 national championship. She's a six-time WNBA All-Star, three-time WNBA most valuable player and is the first woman to have a Nike shoe named after her, the Air Swoopes.
"I want people when you're talking about Notre Dame and Yukon and Tennessee, I want them to say Loyola in that same sentence," Swoopes tells CBS 2's Megan Mawicke. "Do I think that's unreasonable? No. Do I think it's going to happen overnight? Of course not."
