Elburn Girl Dies In Rollerblading Accident

ELBURN (CBS) -- The Kaneland School community is grieving the tragic loss of a Harter Middle School student killed while rollerblading in the far west suburb Friday afternoon.

Caitlyn Phillips, 13, of Elburn, died from injuries she sustained after colliding into a car while rollerblading in the intersection of East Reader Street and North Third Street, Elburn Police said.

The vehicle, driven by a 34-year-old woman of Elburn, was traveling north on North Third Street at the time of the collision, which is a through street.

Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District paramedics were dispatched to the scene at around 3:30 p.m. The seventh-grader was taken by ambulance to Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where she was pronounced dead at 4:37 p.m.

Elburn Police said witnesses reported seeing the young girl rollerblading east on East Reader Street on a downhill incline and it appeared she was unable able to stop before entering the North Third Street intersection, and struck the left front corner of the vehicle.

The accident is under investigation.

Julie-Ann Fuchs, Kaneland assistant superintendent for business, said in the statement that the school support team immediately implemented a post-crisis plan to support students and staff impacted by Caitlyn's sudden death.
