1 Dead, 1 Rescued From Calumet River

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Authorities rescued one person and recovered the body of another in the Calumet River near Torrence Avenue.

Coast Guard Lieutenant Brian Dykens says it happened about 2 p.m.: A swimmer in trouble in the Calumet River south of the O'Brien locks - and those locks are at 134th Street.

"O'Brien Locks received a call from an unknown individual saying there's a person struggling in the water. The friend went in from shore to help this person out who was in the water and was unable to get to him.

"The reporting party said the person went under the water and wasn't seen resurfacing."

The Coast Guard launched a 25-foot response boat for recovery operations.
