CHICAGO (CBS) — At least eight people were wounded in separate shootings during a bloody two hours Friday night on the Northwest and South sides.
In one of those shootings, five people were critically injured in the 2900 block of North Kilpatrick Avenue, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Will Knight said about 8:45 p.m.
As the shootings raged across the city, activists held a rally outside St. Sabina church on the South Side, CBS 2′s Chris Martinez reports.
The coalition of peacemakers included Amy Ruhl, the wife of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, and dozens of grieving moms, who have lost their children to gun violence.
“July is always the deadliest month, so we’re not willing to raise the flag of victory in Chicago yet,” said Fr. Michael Pfleger
So they crossed gang turf lines on Friday night, the first day of summer in what they called a new war on peace.
