Street Vendor Glad Heat Wave Coming To An End
CHICAGO (CBS) — Today is the last day of the stifling heat – at least for a while – and that’s welcome news to a guy who stands on the hot pavement, peddling fruit and water to passing drivers.
WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports Darnell is out on 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive, outside the Museum of Science and Industry, just about every day, despite the sweltering conditions.
“Actually, it’s not too bad today, because it’s a nice breeze coming off the lake, so I’m comfortable today,” he said. “But yesterday and the day before, I was sweating bullets.”
He said he makes sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and eats plenty of fruit.
He estimated it’s been about 110 degrees on the pavement the last few days, “but I’ve been doing this for so long, you get used to it.”
Despite the heat, Darnell said sales have only been “so-so” during the heat wave. Not surprisingly, he’s sold a lot more water than fruit.
He said he drank six or seven bottles a day himself the past few days.
