CHICAGO (CBS) — The head of the Illinois state board that regulates police training is barring a controversial instructor indefinitely – after a Muslim group objected to a course scheduled for this week in the western suburbs, reports WBBM’s Steve Miller.
“I would rather err on the side of caution,” said Kevin McClain, director of the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
He is investigating an instructor Sam Kharoba who teaches a course to police officers called “Islamic Awareness as a Counter-Terrorist Strategy.”
A Muslim group in Chicago objected to Kharoba last week.
“When I review this matter I make sure that it is done in a fair and impartial and sensitive way to the culture,” said McClain. “I am going to halt this individual from delivering law enforcement programs to law enforcement officers in this state.
WBBM is trying to reach out the Kharoba.
