1 Dead, 11 Wounded In Citywide Shootings Overnight
CHICAGO (STMW) — One man was killed and 11 other people were wounded in citywide gun violence, including five people who were shot outside a church on a Chicago Public Schools “Safe Passage” route on the North Side.
The five were shot just before 6 p.m. Monday while standing near a bus stop at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Sheridan Road, authorities said.
Four were hospitalized in serious-to-critical condition and one was in good condition. A 21-year-old man was shot in the head and is in critical condition on life support, authorities said. Police initially reported that the man had died. A 44-year-old man was shot in the knee and thigh. A 32-year-old man was shot in the ankle, and a 26-year-old man was shot in both arms. A 58-year-old man was shot in the hand.
The shooting happened outside the Uptown Baptist Church. Senior church pastor Michael Allen said in a tweet that about 20 gunshots were fired outside during the church’s Monday night meal for the homeless. “Blood pools at church steps. Pray for us,” Allen said on Twitter.
Tuesday morning, a man was shot to death in West Englewood, police said.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head near 62nd Street and Ashland Avenue about 4:06 a.m., police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the man’s death.
No further details about the shooting were immediately available. Just after midnight, two men were shot in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
The two were sitting on the front porch of a home in the 4500 block of South Indiana Avenue when a gunman emerged from a gangway and opened fire about five minutes after midnight, police said.
One of the men, age 49, was shot in the stomach, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condtion, police said.
The other, age 19, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County with a gunshot wound to the leg, police said.
The gunman fled on foot after the shooting. About 45 minutes earlier, a man was shot twice while sitting on his front porch in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. He was shot in the back and also suffered a graze wound to the back. He was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital and was listed in “stable” condition, police said.
A 21-year-old man was shot in the hand in the 1600 block of North Francisco Avenue just after 7 p.m., police said. He was taken to Norwegian-American Hospital in good condition.
About 15 minutes earlier, two teens were shot in the 2100 block of East 71st Street. A 16-year-old boy and 19-year-old man were each shot in the leg, police said.
The boy was taken to Jackson Park Hospital and the man to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Both were in “stable” condition. No one was in custody for any of the shootings Tuesday morning as detectives investigated.
