Man Killed In Rogers Park Hit-And-Run

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police are seeking the motorist who struck and killed an 83-year-old man in the West Ridge neighborhood on the North Side

The unidentified victim left a grocery store and walked toward his son-in-law's video store across the street at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. He never made it.

As he crossed California at Devon he was struck and killed by an suv which sped away without stopping. It appears the driver ran a red light.

A Chicago Police News Affairs spokesman said the vehicle that struck the man was a burgundy or red SUV, possibly a GMC or Chevrolet Suburban.

"It was a red color, but I can't see the plate number because he was very fast," said witness Awia Hawim

The witness says some people chased the vehicle on but the SUV was too fast for them. It got away. It was last seen going south at Rockwell and Peterson.

Chicago Fire Department paramedics transported the man to St. Francis Hospital, in Evanston, but doctors were unable to save him.
