CHICAGO (CBS) — An 11-year-old girl is recovering after being shot on the front porch of her home on the Northwest Side early this morning, reports WBBM’s Steve Miller.

The 11-year-old girl, Cindy Leon, was shot once in the back at around 3:30 a.m., her mother Delina says. She arrived back home from the hospital at 9 a.m. They say the bullet entered and went right through her. Cindy and her mother say she looked down and saw blood.

Delina Leon says the family has lived in the neighborhood for three months. Her daughter was sitting on the front steps early in the morning with others, including her older brother when a woman in her mid-20s came up and started shooting.

Tomorrow would be Cindy’s first day of school, but doctors have told her to sit out a day.
