3 Dead, 10 Wounded In Shootings Since Friday Night

CHICAGO (STMW) --Three men were killed and at least 10 other people were wounded in shootings across the city since Friday night.

Gunfire killed a 21-year-old man and wounded two others inside a Bridgeport apartment on the South Side about 2:45 a.m. Saturday, police said. Daniel Ortiz, 21, of the 3400 block of Hamilton Road in Monee, was was shot in the chest and died at the scene, authorities said.

A 22-year-old man shot in the head was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, police said. The third man, 25, was found in a vehicle that crashed in the 4300 block of South Wentworth Avenue a short time later, police said. He was shot in the head and leg.

Saturday morning, another man was killed on the South Side when he was shot multiple times in the Morgan Park neighborhood, police said. The man, believed to be in his 20s, was found at 11:19 a.m. in a gangway at the rear of a building in the 11700 block of South Hale Avenue, police said.

A 56-year-old man was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the 12200 block of South Aberdeen Street at 7:41 a.m. Sunday in his West Pullman neighborhood home on the South Side.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the death but would not release identification pending family notification.

The man was previously shot in the abdomen at 4:40 a.m. last Monday at his home, Mirabelli said.

Both shootings are believed to be narcotic related, Mirabelli said.

The most recent non-fatal shooting occurred about 3:05 a.m. Sunday in the West Englewood neighborhood. A 23-year-old man was in the 6700 block of South Marshfield Avenue when he started arguing with a man who took out a gun and shot him, police said. The man was shot in the hip and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital where he is in critical condition, police said.

A 16-year-old boy was shot about 6 p.m. Saturday in the Uptown neighborhood. The boy was in the 1000 block of West Wilson Avenue when he was shot in the head about 6:10 p.m., authorities said. He was taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

A second person, who was possibly wounded in the same shooting, later walked into a North Side hospital with a gunshot wound to his wrist, police said.

About 1:20 p.m., a man was shot in the head in the 1200 block of North Orleans Street, police said. He was hospitalized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The wounded man, believed to be in his 20s, was in critical condition, according to dispatch reports.

An 18-year-old man was shot by a relative at 8:56 a.m. in the 500 block of West 81st Street, police said. The man was taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

A 31-year-old man was shot on the West Side about 4:13 a.m. while he was standing on the sidewalk in the 5800 block of West Chicago Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. He was shot in the chest and right arm by a shooter passing by in a light-colored SUV, police said. He was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park in critical condition before being transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said.

About 20 minutes earlier on the North Side, a woman was shot during an armed robbery in the Albany Park neighborhood about 3:50 a.m., police said. The woman was taken from the scene of the crime, in the 4500 block of North Christiana Avenue, to Swedish Covenant Hospital, police said. A suspect was later taken into custody in the 5400 block of North Spaulding after exchanging gunfire with officers, police said. Another suspect, also armed, was taken into custody in the 5300 block of North Kimball Avenue.

A 19-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Pilsen neighborhood on the Lower West Side about 3:20 a.m., police said. The man was standing on a corner in the 1000 block of West 20th Place when somebody in a passing light-colored SUV shot him in the left leg, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in "stable" condition.

In addition to these shootings, an alleged burglar was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer Saturday night in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, police said. The officer was walking in an alley in the 1900 block of North Lincoln Avenue about 11:30 p.m. when he saw a man allegedly trying to break into an apartment, police said. The officer shot the man after he "threatened the officer's life" and pulled a "shiny object" out of his waistband as he ran at the officer, police said.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was dead at the scene, the medical examiner's office said. The officer was not hurt, police said.

Area detectives are investigating the shootings.
