CHICAGO (CBS) -- Debris that apparently fell from a North Lake Shore Drive overpass created traffic problems for commuters.

Several pieces of concrete were underneath Lake Shore Drive on LaSalle Drive, which is near North Avenue beach.

The debris covered most of the westbound lanes of LaSalle Drive. The concrete was discovered around 4:15 p.m.

The ramp onto Lake Shore Drive at LaSalle Drive (North Avenue exit) and the overpass were closed for hours. CDOT crews were on the scene to inspect the overpass and remove any potentially loose concrete from it.

Officials say a portion of concrete, measuring about 3 feet wide by 10 feet long, separated from the structure. There is no word if it was water damage, or a vibrations from passing vehicles, that caused the piece to separate.
