BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (STMW) – No family members were in attendance Monday when Alfreda Giedrojc, the 62-year-old Oak Lawn woman charged with the murder of her granddaughter, made a brief appearance at the Bridgeview courthouse to be officially indicted for the crime.
She was in court about five minutes and stood silently beside attorney Michael Wilson, of the Cook County public defender’s office.
Giedrojc, who was dressed in drab Cook County jail overalls, made no comments during her brief appearance in Judge Kerry Kennedy’s Bridgeview court room. A Polish interpreter translated the judge’s comments for Giedrojc, who was born in Poland.
No plea was entered on Giedrojc’s behalf. Her next date in court is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 14.
Giedrojc is charged with the Oct. 6 murder of Vivian Summers, her 5-month-old granddaughter. Giedrojc was watching the infant at her home, 6605 W. 91st St. Summers is the daughter of Giedrojc’s daughter.
Police say Giedrojc used a sledgehammer to bludgeon the baby and then slashed her throat with a carving knife. She told police that she had placed the sledgehammer in a closet the night before. Wilson had little to say on Monday about the case or his client’s well being.
“We’re still in discovery. I’m not at liberty to say what is in existence. We’ve got to talk with family members. We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Wilson said outside Court Room 103. “She’s in custody now, so that means (the state attorney’s office) has some documentation, so let’s see what they have.”
Asked how his client is doing, he said, “we’ll find out. We’ll talk to her in a little while.”
Wilson was not surprised that none of his client’s family members came to court for her appearance Monday.
“No, no, not at all. I just got off a case that’s six-years old. We went to trial last week, and his mother came to court for the first time. The family will show up. Don’t worry. We’ve got to talk with them any way,” Wilson said.
Giedrojc has been in police custody at the Cook County Jail since the grisly crime stunned Oak Lawn earlier this month.
