Alderman Wants Bells To Toll Across Chicago To Mark Anniversary Of Kennedy Assassination

CHICAGO (CBS) --- The 22nd of November marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Chicago Aldermen have given preliminary approval to a resolution asking that bells toll across the city to mark the observance, reports WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore.

Alderman Wants Bells To Mark Anniversary Of Kennedy Assassination

The City Council Finance Committee, chaired by Alderman Edward Burke, has voted to call on churches and schools to sound their bells to mark the hour when the late President Kennedy was pronounced dead in Dallas. The full City Council is expected to approve the resolution.

Burke says people too young to remember the day need to know their history.

"I would like to think that in schools around the city and churches around the city, the tolling of bells and the moment of silence that hopefully can occur would remind a whole new generation of people about President John F. Kennedy and what he meant to the nation," said Burke.
