CHICAGO (CBS) — A fifth-grade teacher was hit and killed by a Metra train in southwest suburban Tinley Park Friday morning.

“It is with great regret that Community Consolidated School District 146 informs you of the death of Mr. Mark Reilly,” the district said in a statement.

Reilly was employed as a fifth grade teacher for nine years at Memorial School in Tinley Park.

“He was well liked and respected by all, and his untimely passing has profoundly touched all that knew him,” according to the statement.

“The results of his outstanding teaching and his influences on his students will always be remembered.”

Crisis support for students and staff was made available Friday and will be available next week.

The accident halted Rock Island District trains in both directions around 6 a.m. on Friday.
