Residents Displaced In West Side Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two people were displaced by a vacant building fire Saturday morning that spread to a nearby home in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side.

The blaze started in a vacant 2 1/2-story building shortly after 5 a.m. in the 4000 block of West 21st Place and spread to the occupied house next door, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. The building that caught fire had been unoccupied for more than a year.

Two adults who lived in the house next door were in need of shelter after the fire, Langford said.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze, Langford said. There were no injuries.

It appeared that the fire started in the rear of the building, Langford said. But the cause of the blaze was not immediately known as the Office of Fire Investigations was investigating.
