(CBS) – The Obamas have deep roots on the South Side: a house in Kenwood and family and friends. But the president says it comes down to being a good parent, whether he’ll return to live here.
CBS 2′s Brad Edwards talks with Hyde Park locals about the possibility Barack Obama won’t be back.
In January 2017, his youngest daughter, Sasha, will be a sophomore in high school. And it might very well be up to her, the president says.
In an interview with Barbara Walters, the president hinted he’d be reluctant to uproot her and return to Chicago post-presidency.
“He should do for a change what’s best for his family,” Chicagoan Curtis Miller says.
The president also mentioned his family’s sacrifices for his political life.
“We would lose certainly a unique icon, particularly in this neighborhood,” Leland Jackson says in Hyde Park.
“It doesn’t make me sad. I’d just be a little disappointed,” Surya Price says.
It’s been a long while since Mr. Obama strolled these streets.
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he didn’t want to be here,” WVON’s Cliff Kelley says. “I’m sure some people will critical of it, but he’s not originally a Chicagoan, anyway.”
Others say they hope Obama’s presidential library is built in Chicago.
