Shootings In Chicago Down 25 Percent From Last Year

CHICAGO (CBS) -- You hear about crime and it may seem like it's getting worse but the number of murders and shootings in Chicago is actually down.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said there were nine fewer murders in November than in the same month last year.

McCarthy tells CBS 2 there's even a more significant statistic to talk about.

A total of 1,712 people have been shot in Chicago this year.

That's a 25 percent decrease from 2012.

In November, McCarthy said there were 30 murders, compared with 39 in November of last year.

Overall, murders are down 20 percent so far this year.
