Man Charged With Stabbing, Blinding Woman In Rogers Park

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man was ordered held without bond Friday after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend multiple times Wednesday morning, leaving her blind.
The stabbing left the victim "with injuries and repercussions that will be with her for the rest of her life," said prosecutor Erin Antonietti. Basil Mohandie, 23, of the 6900 block of West Nelson Street, was charged with felony counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in connection to the stabbing.
Antonietti said in court that Mohandie and the victim had a relationship that began in early 2013 and then ended at some point. But Mohandie continued to call and harass the victim, Antonietti said. The victim agreed to meet Mohandie on Wednesday at her apartment in the 1600 block of West Touhy. It was not clear in court why the two agreed to meet, other than for Mohandie to walk the victim to a nearby bus stop.
At some point, the two began to argue. Mohandie paper-sprayed the woman in the mouth and she pulled out a knife, Antonietti said.
Mohandie eventually wrestled the knife away from the woman and stabbed her at least 10 times, Antonietti said.
When police responded to the scene, they found the 23-year-old man standing over the woman with a knife in his hand, police said.
The woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston and was in serious condition early Thursday, police said.
Authorities said the attack blinded the woman, who suffered stab wounds to her eyes, skull and right cheek. A wound to her left thigh punctured an artery, and tendons in both of her wrists were severed.
Antonietti told Judge Laura Sullivan that the victim will now have to wear prosthetic eyes.
Mohandie suffered wounds to his hands and a forearm. He was treated at St. Francis and released into police custody.
His criminal history includes a 2009 guilty plea on charges of theft and battery. He was sentenced to court supervision, according to court records.
In 2011, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but the case was dismissed, records show.
