Man Charged With Fatally Stabbing Wife's Pit Bull
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A South Chicago man allegedly stabbed his wife's pit bull to death Friday after the dog intervened in a physical fight between the couple.
Raymond Rodgers, 36, of the 8200 block of South Houston, was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery and criminal damage to property. Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil ordered him held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
Rodgers and his wife had been been arguing on Friday, according to police reports, when Rodgers grabbed his wife. He was allegedly about to strike her, police said, when the dog got up and started barking.
That's when police said Rodgers pushed his wife, took a knife out of his back pocket and began to stab the dog. It later died from those wounds, prosecutors said.
Police said Rodgers fled, but he was later found at Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was being treated for an animal bite. He appeared in bond court Sunday with a bandage on his left arm.
Rodgers was charged with criminal damage to property for allegedly killing the animal. Assistant State's Attorney Charla Blanchard said Rodgers could face further charges, but so far his wife has not been cooperative with investigators.
