New Study Points To Health Risk Of Prolonged Sitting

(CBS) -- Northwestern University research time has found that prolonged sitting is a health problem, all by itself.

Professor Dorothy Dunlop says it's long been know that lack of exercise is a problem.

"What has not been known is whether or not being sedentary is just a reflection of insufficient physical activity or whether being sedentary is a separate and distinct risk factor," said Dr. Dunlop.

New Study Points To Health Risk Of Prolonged Sitting

Dr. Dunlop at Northwestern's Feinberg Medical School says analysis of activity monitors on 2,300 60 year olds found that each additional hour of sitting can double the risk of eventual disability.

Her prescription: Keep moving and stay out of the chair as much as possible.
