Coach Hit By Shot Put, Seriously Injured
(CBS) -- An assistant track coach from Marmion Academy is beginning his recovery after being struck Friday by a shot put during warm-ups at an IHSA sectional meet in Elgin.
Marmion Academy Athletic Director Joe Chivari said Assistant Coach Ed DeGeeter was speaking with another coach and looking at a clipboard as athletes practiced putting the shot and one got away.
Chivari said the shot hit DeGeeter in the left forehead, knocking him down, fracturing his skull and causing a major concussion."
Paramedics transported DeGeeter to St. Joseph Hospital, in Elgin. Chivari said the 42-year-old DeGeeter was responding to questions Saturday and still had a massive headache, but was being moved out of intensive care.
DeGeeter is an assistant track and football coach at the Aurora-based Catholic school, formerly known as Marmion Military Academy.
Police said they considered it a "horrible, horrible accident" and said that no charges will be pressed.
