(CBS) – An expert on global affairs agrees with President Obama’s stance against sending American troops to deal with a growing insurgency in Iraq.
“American combat troops are not going to be fighting in Iraq again,” President Obama said.
He did not rule other forms of military action there, which he said would be “targeted and precise.”
Nabeel Khoury of Chicago Global Affairs agrees with the president’s view that the real problem in Iraq is its current Shiite leaders’ failure to bring the country together.
“In the end, the key is political, which is the local Sunni population turning against ISIS and feeling that the government in Iraq is their government,” Khoury says.
