(STMW) -- Dense fog in the Chicago area Friday night caused flight cancellations and delays at O'Hare and Midway airports.

The National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory for areas near Lake Michigan in Cook and Lake counties about 7:30 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday.

Visibility could be reduced to less than a quarter mile in areas near the lake, according to the weather service.

As of 8:45 p.m., 170 flights were canceled at O'Hare because of weather conditions, and other flights were experiencing delays averaging 45 minutes, according to the city's Department of Aviation.

Flights at Midway were experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes.
