CHICAGO (CBS) — A vicious attack by two dogs in West Chicago injured a senior citizen and killed her little dog.
CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot reports it’s apparently not the first time those dogs went on the attack.
Bonnie Price’s swollen and stitched right hand shows where she says one of two dogs, believed to be pit bulls, bit her hand. Both were attacking Price’s Yorkie Poo Shoo of eight years, Toto. Price was returning to her Forest Trails home in West Chicago after walking Toto.
“And I screamed and I said, ‘Help me! Help me!'” said Price. “It’s unbelievable. They chewed right threw him.”
Toto died. Price’s neighbor, Chris Dubos, ran over with a shovel to help his 83 year-old neighbor.
“Started hitting the dogs in the head. Maybe sounds inhumane but they were mauling her, she was screaming,” said Dubos.
Joe Kern, a painter working on a nearby house, says he and his boss got two fiberglass paint poles, to also beat the dogs off of Price.
“The male, the big dog, was latched onto the little dog and we basically had to beat the big dog off.”
CBS 2 went to the home of the man who owns the dogs, but no one answered.
Neighbor Laura Ekstrom came to console Price. Ekstrom says her Papillon Poodle mix Macy was killed by the same two dogs, last December.
“It’s heartbreaking. She was with us 12 years. It makes me angry This did not have to happen,” said Ekstrom. “It’s gonna be a child next.”
Price says Toto was her constant companion, getting her through cancer and two strokes.
“To lose him, is just the worst,” said Price.
West Chicago police say they’re reviewing the incident for the possibility of charges and looking into the history of the dogs and their owner. DuPage County Animal Care and Control impounded the dogs while the joint investigation continues.
