Woman Injured In Albany Park Fire

(CBS) -- One woman was injured in a fire in an Albany Park apartment building early Saturday morning.

Firefighters were called to the three-story building on the 4900 block of Monticello just after 5 a.m. When they arrived, they found one woman hanging from a second-floor balcony. Firefighters used a ladder to reach her.

She was transported to Swedish Covenant Hospital in serious condition with smoke inhalation.

She later told investigators she fell asleep with food on the stove. Neighbors heard someone yelling fire and ran for the doors.

"When I got up I could see flames out bathroom window and so I opened my backdoor to see if the flames were across the alley but they were not across the alley they were out of back porch so then we hustled to get out of the unit, me, my son and my cat," said building resident Melissa Lindberg.

The back of building was heavily damaged in the fire. No one else was hurt.
