Body Of Teen Recovered In North Suburban Lake

(STMW) -- Authorities have recovered the body of a teen who possibly drowned Monday afternoon in north suburban Third Lake, the Lake County News-Sun is reporting.

Several people were swimming off a pontoon boat when a 16-year-old boy became distressed and went under water, Grayslake Fire Protection District Chief John Christian said.

The group of seven were swimming in the middle of Third Lake, about 100 yards from shore in about 40 feet of water, Christian said.

Those on board used a cell phone to call 911 about 4 p.m., he said. The search set out from the 200 block of Mainsail Drive.

The teen's body was been recovered as of 9 p.m., said Sara Balmes, a spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff's office.

Friends identified the victim as Matt Reed, a student at Grayslake Central High School, CBS 2's Mike Parker reports. The youth may not have been wearing a flotation device, Christian told reporters.

The dive teams and rescue boats came from Grayslake, Fox Lake, Antioch, Lake Villa, Wauconda, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire and Gurnee. Divers from Libertyville, Mundelein and Countryside assisted as well. Sonar equipment was used to help find the teen.
