Nik Wallenda Plans Tightrope Walk Over Chicago River

By John Dodge

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Cars have been driven off it, so why not try a different stunt?

Nik Wallenda announced on Tuesday that he plans to walk on a tightrope between Marina City and the Leo Burnett building, about 50 stories above the Chicago River.

The walk will happen on Sunday, Nov. 2 live on the Discovery Channel at 6 p.m. Chicago time.

To make the trek even more interesting, Wallenda will begin the walk with a 15 degree uphill climb, covering about two city blocks, from Marina City's west tower to the Burnett building.

The second part of the walk will span from the Marina City's west tower to the east tower. The plan is for Wallenda to return to Marina City on the ground and then complete that part of the walk.

"It is an iconic American city that presents a number of extreme conditions and challenges that Nik has yet to attempt on such a grand scale," said Marjorie Kaplan, Group President of Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet.

Dozens of cameras will be positioned across the city and on helicopters as Wallenda attempts the two-part night-time walk in one of the windiest sections of Chicago.

"This is going to be the most incredible tightrope walk of my career," Wallenda said. "I can't think of a better city to do it. I have fond memories of spending time performing in Chicago and the Midwest with my family."

The Discovery Network and Team Wallenda will be covering all of the costs for police, fire and traffic. Wallenda has a $20 million insurance policy.
