3 Dead, 19 Wounded In Weekend Shootings

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three people were killed and at least 19 other people wounded in citywide shootings since Friday evening.

An 18-year-old woman was fatally shot early Sunday while she was in a Belmont Cragin apartment on the Northwest Side.

Alexandra Burgos was sitting in an apartment in the 5300 block of West Oakdale about 12:35 a.m. when gunshots came from outside and struck her in the head, police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

She was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:24 a.m., authorities said. Her home address was not immediately known Sunday evening.

About 1 a.m. Saturday, a man was shot to death in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.

Genorel Martin, 24, was shot in the chest in the apartment building where he lived in the 6700 block of South Throop, according to police and the medical examiner's office. He was opening the door to the building's vestibule when a male opened fire, police said.

Martin was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:12 a.m., authorities said.

About a half hour earlier, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed in the Roseland neighborhood, police said.

Police officers responding to a call of shots fired about 12:25 a.m. found Travis L. Wright in the back seat of a black car in the 9300 block of South Wentworth, authorities said. He lived in the same block.

Wright was shot in the chest and left forearm, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1 a.m., authorities said.

The most recent nonfatal shooting left two men wounded Sunday evening in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

The men, 18 and 22, were in the 5100 block of West Hirsch about 5:15 p.m. when they were shot, police said.

The 18-year-old was shot in the leg, and the 22-year-old suffered a graze wound to the ankle, police said. Both were in good condition at West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park.

A police source said the 18-year-old is a documented gang member.

At least 17 other people have been hurt in separate shootings since 6:40 p.m. Friday.
