Skokie Middle School Cancels Class As Police Investigate Instagram Posts

(CBS) -- A Skokie middle school has canceled classes Wednesday as local and federal law enforcement investigate a series of posts on Instagram.

Oliver McCracken Middle School notified parents Tuesday night by a robocall and a letter that it would be closed.

According to the letter by Dean of Students Nancy Ariola, Skokie Police are investigating, "...a series of Instagram posts that have been shared with some of our sixth grade students."

The letter did not go into detail as to what the instagram posts contained, only that the school will, "...cooperate with the Skokie Police Department to address any inappropriate or threatening online communication."

According to an email sent on Wednesday morning to parents, federal authorities have also joined the investigation.

"The posts came to light because the students, parents, and staff followed the school district's media policies," according to the email.

"Because the safety of our students and staff is our top priority, school officials felt it was in the best interest of our students and staff to cancel classes on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. This will provide the Skokie Police Department with additional time to continue their investigation."
