Off-Duty Officer Robbed, Seriously Injured In Loop

Updated 10/31/14 - 6:38 a.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An off-duty Chicago police officer was beaten and robbed Thursday afternoon inside a parking garage in the Loop.

The police sergeant was in a garage in the 100 block of West Madison Street around 3 p.m., when a group of at least five people walked up and attacked him.

The suspects repeatedly hit the officer before stealing his personal belongings, and taking off in a getaway vehicle. The muggers stole his gun, but did not take his wallet or badge.

Police said the getaway car might be a red Mercury Mountaineer. A maroon bumper from that type of vehicle was found on the 8th floor of the garage after the attack.

The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Sources said he was conscious, but his injuries were severe, and possibly life-altering.

Detectives were reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area, in an effort to track down the robbers.
