Man Shot By Police In Englewood

(STMW) -- A man was shot and wounded by police officers Saturday night in Englewood, authorities said.

The man was shot about 8:16 p.m. in the 5800 block of South Morgan, police Deputy Chief Dana Alexander said.

"Englewood District tactical officers were on patrol when they responded to a call of 'man with a gun' in the 5800 block of S. Morgan," according to a written statement from the police department.

"Officers observed a man matching a radio description flee on foot to the back of a residence," the statement said. "Officers gave chase and confronted the subject in a rear of the residence."

"Officer observed the offender holding a weapon and ordered him to drop it. The offender did not comply, at which point officers discharged their weapons," the statement said.

The man was struck and taken to Stroger Hospital, according to the statement. A weapon was recovered on the scene.

The man was listed in serious to critical condition, Alexander said. He said he didn't know how many times the man was shot, nor his age.

No officers were injured, according to Alexander.

Pat Camden, a police union spokesman, said the 33-year-old man's mother had called the police shortly after 8 p.m. because he had fired shots inside the home, where he lives with his parents. The man's father leaned out a second-floor window and shouted to the police that his son had a gun, Camden said.

Camden said officers spotted the man outside his home, chased him onto the enclosed porch and ordered him to put down his weapon. He said the man put the gun on the stairs but then reached for it and was shot three times.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
