Dentist Offers To Buy Leftover Halloween Candy

Podcast

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A local dentist is trying to save children's teeth, and provide some treats to members of the U.S. military for the fifth year in a row.

WBBM Newsradio's Bernie Tafoya reports Dr. Russell Pollina is offering to buy back Halloween candy from children for a dollar a pound, plus a chance to win other prizes in a free drawing.

Pollina said he collected 750 pounds of candy last year at his offices in Barrington and Mt. Prospect. He said cavities continue to be a big issue for children, and getting them to eat less candy and sugar-filled juices can go a long way to help.

The candy may be dropped off Monday afternoon and evening at Pollina's Barrington office, 18 E. Dundee Road, Bldg. 5, Suite 100; and on Tuesday at his Mt. Prospect office, 601 W. Central, Suite 4. All collected candy will go to troops through Operation Gratitude.

There's also a free raffle involved. Kids who sell back the candy they collected can win free electronics or movie theater gift certificates. Parents can also win restaurant gift certificates.
