Teen Wanted For Burglary Arrested After Police Chase, Shooting, Crash

Updated 11/14/14 - 12:41 p.m.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 18-year-old man wanted for burglary was arrested early Friday, after he allegedly stole two vehicles, and led police on multiple chases, involving several crashes in the northern suburbs. A police officer shot the man at one point before he was finally captured.

Police said the driver was identified as 18-year-old Ronald Maas, of Ingleside, who already was wanted on an arrest warrant for a felony burglary charge.

Maas has been charged with one count of attempted murder, two counts of unlawful possession of a motor vehicle, one count of theft, three counts of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, two counts of aggravated fleeing, one count of attempted theft, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of criminal damage to government property.

Lake County Sheriff's police said officers in Round Lake spotted Maas driving a stolen Ford sedan shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday, and tried to pull the vehicle over, but Maas sped away.

The officers later ended their pursuit, but put out a dispatch report warning other police departments of the stolen car.

Shortly after 11 p.m., Lake Villa police came across a rollover crash involving the stolen car. Police said Maas fled the scene on foot, and stole a Ford pickup a few blocks away. He then picked up a 15-year-old friend, and was spotted again around 11:15 p.m. in unincorporated Lake County.

A Lake County Sheriff's deputy tried to make a traffic stop, and briefly gave chase.

Around 11:30 p.m., two other sheriff's deputies spotted the truck near Route 134 and Forest Avenue in Ingleside. The truck turned around, and crashed into another pickup truck head-on. Police said Maas then backed up and accelerated towards one of the sheriff's deputies, and struck the deputy's squad car. He then rammed the other pickup truck, before again trying to strike the squad car.

A Round Lake Heights officer who was at the scene shot at Maas, who was able to escape.

Less than an hour later, Grayslake police officers spotted the truck driving north on U.S. Route 45, and gave chase. During that chase, the pickup truck hit a Chevy Spark head-on near Dada Drive in unincorporated Lake County near Third Lake. Police said Maas then fled the scene on foot toward a nearby ranch.

The 15-year-old girl identified the suspect as Maas, and provided police with a detailed description. She was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, for minor injuries she suffered in the crash.

Maas was arrested around 1:20 a.m., when someone called 911 after they heard him moaning near their barn. Police said Maas had climbed into a work truck, and was trying to get away when police arrested him.

Maas had been shot in the cheek, and suffered a broken arm during one of the crashes. He also was being treated at Condell Medical Center.

Two people inside the Spark were seriously injured, and had to be cut free from the car before they were taken to the hospital.
