Doug McDermott Will Undergo Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

(CBS) Bulls rookie wing Doug McDermott will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, the team announced Friday evening. There's no timetable yet for his return.

Counting Friday evening's game against Portland, McDermott has missed five straight contests. The circumstances around his injury are mysterious, with McDermott saying he started getting right knee swelling shortly after getting off the plane back from a win in Brooklyn on Nov. 30.

Initially, McDermott called the injury "minor." He's also said he hasn't had any history of knee problems.

"It's really nothing serious at all," McDermott said on Dec. 2.

McDermott was a fringe rotation player for the Bulls, averaging 3.2 points in 11.6 minutes per game. He played more early in the season than he had been prior to the knee injury.

The procedure will be performed by Bulls head team physician Dr. Brian Cole of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, the team said. A date hasn't been announced.
