Elgin Man Charged With Attacking Officers
(STMW) -- An northwest suburban man is charged with hitting a police officer and trying to drive away during a traffic stop early Saturday in Elgin.
An officer pulled over a vehicle about 12:18 a.m. on Randall Road just north of Route 20, according to a statement from Elgin police.
The officer learned the driver, 18-year-old Mario F. Randazzo, had a suspended license and tried to arrest him, police said. Randazzo tried to drive away while the officer attempted to gain control of the vehicle.
Randazzo hit the officer in the face, and another assisting officer also suffered injuries in addition to having his glasses knocked off his face, police said. The officers used pepper spray on Randazzo and were eventually able to take him into custody.
Randazzo, of the 1700 block of Sheffield in Elgin, is charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, criminal damage to property and resisting a police officer, all felonies, police said. He is also charged with a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license.
Randazzo was taken to the Kane County Jail, where he is being held on a $35,000 bond, police said.
