Orland Park Offering Community Loyalty Rewards Program

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Countless stores have loyalty rewards programs, and now southwest suburban Orland Park is trying its own points program to get more people engaged in their community.

The "In Our Community" rewards program is believed to be a first of its kind in the nation, according to Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin.

It works very much like those offered by retail stores.

"It's a point system where you get engaged in the community by attending functions, or posting some comments on social media," McLaughlin said.

For instance, users get 1,000 points just for signing up, and can earn more by shopping and dining in Orland Park, attending local events, and more.

McLaughlin said, since Friday, as many as 350 people have signed up, and he thinks other suburbs might follow Orland Park's lead.

"I think every community wants to get their citizens more engaged with what they're doing, and kind of encourage a positive attitude and community spirit,"

Some other examples of activities that can earn you points: recycling your holiday lights and posting a photo on Instagram, posting your favorite Orland Park restaurant on Facebook, or congratulating the Carl Sandburg High School cheerleading team.

Points can be redeemed for a lunch with McLaughlin, personal training sessions, gift cards to restaurants, and even indoor skydiving.
