Chatham Residents Want To Hear Details From Mayoral Candidates
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The final debate before Chicago's mayoral election on Feb. 24 takes place Tuesday on CBS 2 and Dorothy Tucker reports people want to hear more than headlines, they want details.
The sense of pride from long time Chatham residents like Wilhemenia Maxey comes from the community's strong middle class foundation, its bustling stores along Cottage and 87th.
The issues in this predominately African American community are similar to others in the city.
"The concerns are break-ins," Maxey said. "We need to see more policing, not only driving but footwork around the neighborhood."
The mayoral candidates will be expected to explain in detail how they intend to put more officers on the streets.
One resident said, "They need more affordable housing for seniors."
Current issues are also important.
Business managers want to hear the candidates' plans to stop the influx of parking meters in neighborhoods.
Charlie Simmons wants to know about jobs: when, how many and where is what he wants to know.
"A lot of people out of work struggling from day to day," he said. "People have money they don't have to out and do the wrong thing to get it."
