Man Slain In West Town, 1-Year-Old Girl Found Safe

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 60-year-old man was shot and stabbed to death Monday night in the West Town neighborhood, and the 1-year-old girl he was babysitting was found safe at a relative's home.

Police said the man was found dead in an apartment in the 100 block of North Wood Street, after firefighters responded to a fire alarm around 9 p.m., and forced entry into the apartment. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has identified the man as 60-year-old Robert Smith.

Smith was found lying face down in the hallway, with multiple stab and gunshot wounds. Food was burning on the stove, police said.

Relatives said he was babysitting his 1-year-old grandniece at the time. Hours later, his grandniece was found unharmed at a relative's home. She was taken to a hospital for a checkup.

Police said investigators do not know yet how she arrived at the relative's home, or how long she had been there.

Detectives said Smith's death might have been domestic-related, but the homicide was still under investigation Tuesday morning.
