Derrick Rose To Have Surgery Friday Morning

(CBS) Bulls point guard Derrick Rose will have surgery on his the medial meniscus tear in his right knee on Friday morning, the team announced.

The Bulls' release used the term "meniscectomy," which is the removal of all or part of the meniscus, according to WebMD. That points toward Rose having a shorter rehabilitation process than if he would have the meniscus repaired, as he did after a November 2013 injury (he missed the rest of that season). However, until the surgery is performed, the extent of the injury still won't be known.

The Bulls have privately expressed hope this injury isn't as significant as Rose's past setbacks, which started with a torn left ACL in April 2012.

Head team physician Dr. Brian Cole will perform the surgery on Rose. The team will know a timetable for Rose's return after that.

"We don't even want to jump ahead like that," Bulls coach Thibodeau said Wednesday regarding talk of a possible return. "The big thing is to just take it step by step. We just got the news, and first and foremost is Derrick and our concern for him.

"The guy's been through so much, what he's put into it. And this one – anytime you have surgery, it's tough – but this will hopefully be much shorter than the other ones. But the big thing is our concern for him first as a person."

Bulls general manager Gar Forman will meet with the media at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Rose is averaging 18.4 points on 5.0 assists, shooting just shy of 41 percent in what's been an up-and-down season. He's played in 46 of Chicago's 58 games this season, but he's played in just 95 of the Bulls' past 288 regular-season games because of his many injuries.
