Chicago Family Stranded On Snowy Kentucky Highway For 16 Hours

(CBS) – A Chicago family was stranded on a snowy highway for 16 hours in Kentucky, along with hundreds of other drivers.

CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez has their story.

We're talking about mile after mile of cars and trucks stuck on I-65 in Kentucky.

Trucks were backed up for miles near Elizabethtown, Ky., and stuck in the middle of the night until noon Thursday were Kimberly Ray of Chicago, who was en route to her nephew's graduation from Army Ranger school.

"We were running out of food, and everybody we called for help, nobody would help us. So, I was getting kind of nervous," Ray says.

Ray was trapped with her husband, sister and daughter. She says it was even worse for other drivers.

"There was a woman with a 5-month-old and a 3-year-old kid. Her car was running out of gas and she had no food for them," Ray says.

When she tried calling state police, say says, "They just said 'God bless you' and hung up."

Eventually, firefighters transported them to a restaurant.

The National Guard was still cleaning up the accident scene.
