25 Displaced By Fire In Heart Of Chicago Neighborhood, Firefighter Suffers Minor Injury

(CBS) -- First responders smothered the flames in a three story building, but not before people who lived there had to brave the smoke and danger to escape to safety.

Neighbors tell CBS 2's Jeremy Ross that it is amazing that no one was killed in the blaze in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood.

The fire was concentrated in a stairwell and the third floor of the building near 20th and Wolcott and spread to a building next door.

Firefighters say the blaze started about 1:40 a.m. Sunday and say that 25 people have been displaced by the fire.

None of the residents of the building were harmed, thanks to first responders and neighbors who saw the fire and the need to help.

One nearby worker used a forklift to help get people out of the burning building.

"He actually lifted up the forklift and helped out the four people that were in the building," said Jessica Mendoza.

The Red Cross is helping out. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
